As previously noted, WWE reportedly made an offer to purchase TNA Wrestling from the current owners. Soon after the reports became public knowledge, differing opinions regarding WWE’s motivation behind the move began to surface.

Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com reported last week that WWE’s offer to TNA wasn’t that recent, and that they were really only interested in acquiring the tape library of the promotion. However, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter editor is now reporting that a legitimate buy-out offer was made at some point, and is actually still an option if no other buyers end up acquiring the company.

Additionally, Meltzer noted on Tuesday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE is apparently back in the picture in terms of potentially buying the company outright.

It’s worth noting that despite the fact that Billy Corgan replaced Dixie Carter as the TNA President, and even invested into ownership of the promotion himself, that the former female head of TNA still has the rights to sell to whichever buyer(s) she sees fit. Meltzer noted that the situation regarding TNA and the potential sale has become “very complicated.”

The aforementioned Smashing Pumpkins frontman noted during an ESPN interview this week that buying the company is still a possibility, but would be weeks away at best. According to Meltzer, however, Corgan must first make a deal to fund the TNA Bound For Glory pay-per-view this Sunday, as well as the follow-up television tapings in Orlando, Florida next week.

We’ll keep you updated as additional information surfaces regarding the potential sale of TNA Wrestling.

Estimated Value Of TNA If WWE Were To End Up Buying The Company

As noted, WWE is reportedly back in the running to potentially buy out TNA Wrestling, as the second biggest pro wrestling promotion in North America is getting close to pulling the trigger one way or another on a deal of some kind in the very near future.

In terms of the value of TNA to WWE, there are starting to be estimates surfacing online. While nothing is definite and the figures are completely based on speculation and numbers from similar deals WWE has made in the past, it looks like there is an actual formula to determine what they would be willing to spend to acquire the promotion.

WWE’s only real motivating factor behind getting involved in negotiations to attempt to buy out TNA would be strictly to acquire their tape library, which is around 14-years deep at this point, making it at least a potential seven-figure deal.

Outside of some exceptions, WWE has priced video library acquisitions at $500 per hour. While not exact by any means, if you wanted to determine a ballpark figure for such a deal you could estimate that TNA has accumulated three-hours of programming over 14 years with two-hour Impact Wrestling and one-hour Xplosion shows each week and prior to that, weekly three-hour pay-per-view shows during their formative years.

Using those figures in your equation to try and reach an approximate dollar amount that WWE would be willing to spend to acquire TNA, the end result would have TNA’s value to WWE at the $1.09 million range.

If TNA fails to find an investor or buyer to fund Bound For Glory and their follow-up television tapings at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, which kicks off with the pay-per-view this Sunday, WWE could very well purposely wait in the hopes that TNA ends up going bankrupt. This would give WWE more leverage to gain the best possible rates as they could simply pick up the pieces that interest them at auction for a considerable amount less than if they were to deal with the current owners directly. Such a scenario would be very similar to the way things played out when WWE acquired ownership rights to ECW back in 2001.

With the final business day before the Bound For Glory PPV and subsequent TV tapings being this Friday, one way or another, the clock is ticking and TNA will have to make a significant financial deal before the end of this week to stay afloat. Based on past reports, TNA would need somewhere in the neighborhood of mid-to-high six-figures to finance their PPV and a block of TV tapings.

As always, we will keep you updated as soon as any additional information regarding the future of TNA Wrestling and/or the potential sale of the company becomes available

WWE didnt buy ECW in 2001, they bought them a couple years later, thats why after SummerSlam during the invasion they dropped the ECW/WCW names and refered to them as the Alliance, they also stopped using the ECW music since they didnt have the rights to it.

Read somewhere that WWE buying TNA is more of a last resort, since they have a few others like Corgan and Arolux who TNA owes money too. From what I have read though, Corgan and Carter have said BFG is a go as well as the tapings, which were funded by an unknown third party

As previously reported, Dixie Carter held a backstage meeting this week at the Impact television tapings. The feeling going around the locker room is that, while Dixie addressed the situation head-on, nothing has been resolved.

We noted earlier that Billy Corgan was at the meeting, though he didn’t speak. We’ve recently learned that Corgan was in fact not at the meeting, and reportedly declined the invitation to attend. According to PWInsider, many talents have faith in Corgan and respect him as a straight-shooter. His absence from the meeting is said to have sent a message to everyone that the end could be near. There was real concern that Dixie was going to sell the company. She told talents at the meeting that she would not let the sale happen, especially to WWE, and also said there was no real chance of Bound For Glory not happening but multiple sources say otherwise..

There are rumors going around today saying WWE is purchasing the TNA tape library and that Corgan will be re-branding TNA as a new company. WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross said that he heard a similar story from a reliable source but reiterated that this is just a rumor. While WWE has been in talks to purchase the library, this scenario seems unlikely as WWE wasn’t interested in making a deal without non-competes for Dixie and Corgan. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter elaborated with this recent tweet:

Peter Ohara @peterohara95
@davemeltzerWON Why doesn't Dixie sell TNA to WWE and use the money with Corgan to start a new company?

WWE isn't going to buy without a non-compete and what they are offering is very little. https://twitter.com/peterohara95/status/781200056225587200

Seems as though things went down hill after Jarrett left, or maybe he knew it was headed that way.

Yeah, just look at what he is doing with Global Force Wrestling, although last I heard he was doing some cash for gold scheme under the Global Force brand.
